Phase I results:

Phase entitled "The study of polycrystalline compounds ( superconductors and nitride thin films ) by electrical, magnetical, mechanical and chemical structure investigations" has three objectives, which were made by running the eight main activities.

The main achievements in this phase are:

*     The obtained results integrate with the reported results in Europe and worldwide by several research groups concerning the improvement and the pinning properties of polycrystalline superconducting materials (University of Cambridge, Vienna University of Technology, a IFW Dresden, ICMAB Barcelona) and large companies seeking immediate implementation of technology applications (Siemens and Nexans).

*     By solid state reaction method we obtained the superconducting ceramic material (30 samples) whose electrical and mechanical properties were improved

Bi:2223
 Bi:2212 target

Bi:2201

*  Using suitable stoichiometric conditions and controlled synthesis of compounds we obtained single phase samples of Bi: 2201, Bi: 2212 and (Bi, Pb) 2223, whose properties were improved by  pressing and heat treatment.

*     Pressed powder (Bi, Pb): 2223 before sintering leads to higher critical current density due to the increasing strength of intergrain pinning.

*      Transport measurements showed an increase in critical current density and mechanical measurements have shown a hardness increase and a porosity decrease with increasing compression pressure.

*     By pressing and syntherizing at high temperatures, the electric and magnetic properties of materials are improved.

*     SEM measurements show that the samples obtained have a good quality due to higher grain and partialy oriented.

*     Sintering temperature leads to an increase in sample density.

*     Intergranular critical current calculated from the experimental data of AC susceptibility on Bean model has a conduct specific to intergranular junctions of type SNS.

*     It was probed a simple method to control the deposition process of TiN layers by reactive sputtering at low temperatures.

*     Were obtained titanium nitride layers on silicon substrate and it was studied the influence of deposition process parameters (nitrogen flow, bias voltage, discharge current) on the microstructure and microhardness of layers.

*   Maximum hardness of the TiN layers have been obtained slightly lower than those reported by other authors (2200-2300 HV).
