Rules for the discussion based course
1. Read and understand the assigned chapter or part of the chapter before each class. Solve the assigned problems. Solve the extra problems!
2. Form 3 person groups before each class --> done randomly each time by picking a number.
3. Each group gets a question (q1) and problem (p) from the professor. The question and the problem should be answered after a 15 minute discussion within the group.
4. There is also an extra, harder question or problem (q2) which is the same for all groups.
5. One representative of each group will sketch the response to the q1 question in 5 minutes. If the response is good, each group member gets 0.5 point. Another representative of the group will sketch the answer for the problem in an additional 5 minutes. If the response is good, each group member will get another 0.5 point. The professor will decide if the answer is acceptable or not. If the group doesn’t know the answer, other groups can get these points if they provide the good answer but only within the assigned 5+5 minutes. The third group member can provide also the answer for the harder q2 question (you have an additional 5 minutes to do that). Each group has only one chance. The first group that will provide the right answer will get an additional 1 point for each group member.
6. The points collected during these discussion sessions will contribute to the final mark.
7. In order to get the maximum percentage for the class activity students should collect on average 1 point per each class. Additional points can make you feel comfortable….
8. Please do use also the office hours to clarify other aspects not covered during the class.
