Extra problem
Let us study the concentration of Schottky defects in a crystal as a function of temperature. Study the problem first just by the use of the entropy, and than by the use of the Boltzmann factor.
What is a Schottky defect?
- one type of “defect” in a crystalline lattice which arises when an atom lives the inside of the lattice and diffuses on the surface of the material.
- inside the lattice the total binding energy of the atom is bigger than on the surface --> we have an energy surplus associated with this defects.
- One can choose the energy scale so that the total binding energy of the atoms inside the crystal is: 0. The binding energy of the atoms on the surface will be than e.
