THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL SIMULATION IN GLOBAL SOLAR AND STELLAR CORONAL SEISMOLOGY:
CONECTIONS GLOBAL - LOCAL WVES, MAGNETIC FIELDS-VARIABILITY
Abstract
ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF WAVES IN THE SOLAR (AND STELLAR) CORONA IS THAT THEY CARRY INFORMATION
ABOUT THE PLASMA IN WHICH THEY PROPAGATE. HUGE ERUPTIVE EVENTS, SUCH AS FLARES OR CORONAL MASS EJECTIONS (CMES),
CAN GENERATE GLOBAL CORONAL WAVES WHICH PROPAGATE OVER DISTANCES COMPARABLE TO THE SOLAR RADIUS. IN THEIR
PROPAGATION GLOBAL WAVES CAN INTERACT WITH, E.G. LOCAL CORONAL LOOPS OR PROMINENCES GENERATING SECONDARY
OSCILLATIONS IN THESE STRUCTURES. THE PROPOSED APPLICATION WILL COMBINE OBSERVATIONALLY MEASURABLE QUANTITIES
(AMPLITUDE, WAVELENGTH, PROPAGATION SPEED, ATTENUATION) AND THEORETICAL MODELS (DISPERSION RELATIONS, EVOLUTIONARY
EQUATIONS) TO DERIVE QUANTITIES WHICH CANNOT BE MEASURED DIRECTLY (MAGNETIC FIELD, TRANSPORT COEFFICIENTS, SUB-
STRUCTURE, MAGNETIC MAPS OF THE QUIET SUN, HEATING/COOLING FUNCTIONS)I.E. GLOBAL AND LOCAL WAVES ARE USED TO
PLASMA AND FIELD DIAGNOSTIC. A PROMISING NEW WAY TO PROBE STELLAR ATMOSPHERE IS TO USE OUR KNOWLEDGE OF CORONAL
SEISMOLOGY ON THE SUN AND TO APPLY IT TO MORE DISTANT STARS. WE WILL ALSO ENABLE TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF CYCLIC
MAGNETIC ACTIVITY ON OBSERVED QUANTITIES LIKE ORBITAL PERIOD VARIABILITY. THE SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES OF THIS APPLICATION
ARE:
(I) THE INVESTIGATION OF THE PROPERTIES OF CORONAL EIT WAVES AND THEIR USE FOR GLOBAL SOLAR AND STELLAR CORONAL SEISMOLOGY
(II) THE INTERACTION BETWEEN GLOBAL EIT WAVES AND CORONAL LOOPS, GENERATION OF LOCAL OSCILLATIONS, SCALING LAWS AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA FOR LOOP OSCILLATIONS.
(III) TO INVESTIGATE THE CONNECTION MAGNETIC FIELDS - SOLAR AND STELLAR VARIABILITY
