Doctoral School of Physics - short presentation
Introduction
The Doctoral School of Physics operates within the Faculty of Physics at Babeș-Bolyai University, offering students the opportunity to broaden and deepen their professional training in physics through scientific research that culminates in a doctoral thesis and results published in high-quality scientific publications. The research areas available to doctoral students are diverse, reflecting both established and contemporary developments in physics: condensed matter physics, biomedical physics, computational physics, the science and technology of materials, nanomaterials, biomaterials and biofunctional nanomaterials, magnetism, spintronics, plasmonics, polymers, interdisciplinary biomedical research at the interface of physics, chemistry, life sciences and environmental sciences, using spectroscopic techniques and methods (Raman, fluorescence, IR, etc.), magnetic resonance, biomedical imaging, sensing, computational and experimental investigations of molecular compounds and structures with medical and/or technological applications (drugs, biomarkers, carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, etc.), modelling and simulation of two-dimensional structures, physical properties and phenomena at nuclear, atomic and molecular levels, interactions between laser radiation and matter, complex social phenomena, etc.

Research is conducted in the laboratories and research centres of the Faculty of Physics, brought together within the Ioan Ursu Institute, in the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research in Bio-Nano-Sciences at Babeș-Bolyai University, in other laboratories within the faculty and university, and in national and international institutes through jointly supervised doctoral programmes, European doctorate programmes, ERASMUS mobility and other opportunities. The individual scientific research programme lasts four years and begins with a semester of advanced training through specialised courses, laboratories and seminars, as well as courses on academic ethics and integrity and the methodology of scientific writing. At the end of the first year, all doctoral students present a research project. At the end of each of the following three years, they present progress reports on the research carried out within the proposed project.
The scientific research programme involves sustained activity under the guidance of the doctoral supervisor and three appointed mentors. The annual presentation of a scientific research report is a useful and necessary step in preparing for the defence of the doctoral thesis in front of the guidance committee at the end of the four years.
